Top Questions About Laboratory Software

We provide highly-adaptive LIMS systems that cover most if not all of a laboratory’s software needs. Due to the differences in size and function between labs, prices are quoted according to the specific needs of each lab. This is so customers only pay for what they need to keep costs to a minimum.

Our systems are built to evolve over time, so that your return on investment (ROI) grows over time, rather than requiring replacement. Our LIMS software enables laboratories to comply with industry standards and automate work. Labs save money through increased efficiency, improved availability of data, and a reduction in costly errors, by adopting a LIMS. Calculating the cost savings using ROI analysis is a great way to justify the purchase of a LIMS. View our cost justification white paper here.

LIMS can be licensed as a perpetual license with a one-off payment, plus annual support costs. Or, you can pay through a yearly or quarterly subscription model. Perpetual licensing needs more money up-front but less over the lab software's lifetime.

The majority of customers use this model as a LIMS is a long-term investment. Licensing can be by the number of concurrent users or by individual named users. Autoscribe uses the concurrent user model and avoids named licenses to minimize administration.

Deployment models for the software may be On-Premise or Cloud (remotely hosted). Cloud hosting can be provided by Autoscribe, or by the client. If provided by us, the software can be hosted on an individual server. This allows the most control over when maintenance updates occur, or new versions of the software are installed. Or it can be hosted on a server shared with other clients. This gives little control over when updates happen but costs less. Autoscribe software can be deployed on-premise or in the cloud as preferred by the client.

Laboratory software is a general term that covers a wide range of systems. The most common types are:

Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS).

LIMS manage and track sample information through an analytical laboratory. Features include audit trails and electronic signatures (E Sigs) to help labs follow standards such as 21 CFR part 11, GxP, and ISO 17025. LIMS are often integrated with laboratory instruments and other systems. This includes software like enterprise resource planning (ERP), and electronic medical records (EMR). Inter-connectivity allows them to pass data efficiently to avoid manual transcription errors. They also manage staff competency, instrument maintenance and calibration, CAPA, inventory, and more.

Electronic Lab Notebook (ELN)

ELN software is used in research and development laboratories to replace paper notebooks. ELNs enable research data to be kept electronically, facilitating sharing and collaboration. Like LIMS, ELNs have digital signatures, audit trails, and tight access control.

Laboratory Execution System (LES)

LES are often part of a LIMS and ensure laboratory staff follow the Standard Operating Procedures (SOP). Staff often need to follow a step-by-step guide, signing off each step in the process. LES takes them through these required steps.

Laboratory Information System (LIS)

LIS manage clinical diagnostic testing within a hospital or healthcare environment. They are patient-centric, with an emphasis on keeping personal information secure. LIMS are generally batch and sample-centric. LIS tend to concentrate on HIPPA compliance, while LIMS are focused on ISO17025 and 21 CFR part 11 compliance.

Scientific Data Management Systems (SDMS)

SDMS is a subset of LIMS functionality focused on managing files generated in a lab environment. These are usually instrument files, but SDMS can also manage reports and certificates of analysis produced by LIMS.

Laboratory Instrument Software

Laboratory instruments frequently use laboratory software to help manage them. Data from simple instruments can be passed directly to the LIMS, often via interfacing software or by a protocol such as RS232.
More complex systems often have unique laboratory instrument software. For instance, a chromatography data system has its own management software to extract and process data. LIMS vendors, including Autoscribe, have developed interfaces to connect these pieces of software. These range from simple serial interfaces to complex IP-based API interfaces.

Although the initials are the same, these are not the same as LIS.

Analytical and contract testing laboratories use LIMS to manage and report on the testing they do. These labs typically use a set of defined tests to analyze samples based on standard operating procedures. Products can be tested against specific product limits defined in the LIMS. ELNs are generally used in research laboratories where, by their nature, experiments tend to be unique. LIS is used in healthcare and other patient-centric situations.

We provide software both to in-house laboratories and to contract laboratories that test on behalf of others. Popular industries served by Autoscribe include pharmaceutical, medical devices, water, food and beverages. Learn how our software helps specific industries on the industry pages here.

Matrix Gemini LIMS from Autoscribe Informatics can be configured to suit the exact needs of every laboratory.

Its unique built-in configuration tools enable every screen in the workflow to be changed without any software coding. It is a low code development platform that manages configuration changes. This means it maintains a full history of changes over its lifetime, as it evolves with the laboratory.

The result is an optimized LIMS that drives excellence in standard operating procedures, is easy to use, and is easily adopted by staff. Our Matrix Gemini LIMS also helps organizations meet regulations such as 21 CFR Part 11. It also supports Data Integrity principles (ALCOA and ALCOA+) and much more.
